 They grey squirrel has virtually pushed the red squirrel to near extinction. It competes for food with the endangered dormouse as well. It is grey with mid brown along the upper back and their body is 24-26cm long and their tail 19-24cm long.
Squirrels weigh approximately 450-650gramms and live for 5-7 years. They have generally 2 litters a year with between 3-7 kittens and leave the nest after 7 weeks.
They cause serious damage to forests by stripping the bark. If they gain access to lofts, damage can be caused to roof timbers, electrical wiring and plumbing.
Squirrels do not hibernate but are less active in the bad weather. Control is normally done by live cage traps and then they are humainly destroyed. |
